I was just reading about non-party kids feeling lonely on campus (not Point Park specifically, just college in general). If a student isn't a drinker, is he/she that much of a minority? What can kids do on weekends at Point Park for fun that doesn't involve drinking? I've heard that corner of the city can be rather quiet after business hours.

Hey there! My biggest advice to you is to get involved! Do everything you can, and take advantage of everything your university has to offer you. There is such a diverse population of people at Point Park, so I'm sure you will have no problem finding your place here. The whole new state thing I can understand is scary--been there. But a lot of students at this university are from the area, so they will be able to help you get wherever you need to go! I hope this has helped. I'll be posting more soon, so keep reading! :)

Hey Samuel,
My first piece of advice is to just be yourself. In high school we tend to get lost in the crowds and cliques instead of being individuals. Coming in you might feel the need to fit in but trust me things are so much easier when you're true to yourself. As far as school work do your personal best. Don't think because you're only a freshmen that grades don't count. Remember all your grades in up on your college transcript. It's best to start your high school years off right so by the time you are a senior working hard comes naturally. I hope these tips help you. Good luck on your first year!

Help! I'm new and it's my freshman year. Advice?
Well, I just moved to a different state and don't know ANYONE.
I start my freshman year in a couple days, I'm excited, but scared at the same time.Any advice for HS, and making new friends would be super helpful.
It's pretty easy for me to make friends, I had a ton of friends in my old city.
Anything helps, thanks.

Alex- I think I might know who you're talking about since I was part of the first graduating class in Cinema. In fact I'm almost positive I know who you're talking about. Let me just say that you'd have to try really hard to NOT do anything with your degree right after college. Especially in film at this point in Pittsburgh's ever growing film community (hell, Batman is shooting here. Can't say I ever expected that entering point park in 2003). All I have to say is that you give it everything to succeed. Its not going to be all handed to you. Your comments about talent? Yeah that's true but you'll find a lot less talented people than you getting jobs because they're someones nephew or they simply know the right person to be hired at the right time. I've been in it for almost five years now working in pittsburgh, philadelphia, and new york and it never gets easy. Hang in there and keep pursuing. Sometimes your goals change (probably inevitable), but to just stay in pittsburgh and become bitter because you never ventured away for your career in film isn't going to help your career.

Nice blog! I am an incoming freshman for Fall 2011...as a Journalism major! I am so nervous about moving from small town York, PA into the heart of Pittsburgh, but so many people have been so nice whenever I have a question. I was wondering what advice you have for incoming freshman?

Thanks and I look forward to your posts!
