Because I was confused about internships, I just have to some assume others were as well. Because, seriously, applying for these things can get hectic! After landing my first internship with my current employer, Luminari, I learned a little more about the application process.

My advice to anyone looking for an internship is START EARLY. You can never send your resume in too soon. The worst they could do is delete your email, and you’ll have to send it again. Companies like students who are on top of things and know what they want. Make sure your resume is up to par with everyone else’s. You don’t want your experience and qualifications to get looked over because your resume wasn’t organized well. Don’t be afraid to ask for help; that’s what our career services department is here for!

So, you’ve sent your resume, they obviously love you, and now they want an interview. Don’t freak out. An interview is just a conversation about how great you are…basically. Be calm and collected and keep your hair out of your face! Always be professionally personable. That’s the key.

These are just some little tips. If you have any more questions, I’d love to help anyone out! Just let me know, because I promise you, once you land that internship, you’re going to feel like a million bucks! Good luck!

Well, hey everyone! I’ve been out of touch for a bit, and I apologize, but it has been a crazy couple of weeks getting back into the swing of things. I think I’m still adapting to the freezing cold weather as opposed to the sweet sunshine of Orlando, Florida. But I promise I’m back, and I’ll be posting more regularly!

Let me update you on what’s going on: I’m living in the Boulevard Apartments with five great ladies, I’m playing softball, I’m interning with a non-profit organization called Luminari, I’m taking classes, I’m working at The Globe, and I’m still trying to have some fun!

I’d like to focus this semester on athlete topics. Not too many people pay attention to us here at Point Park University, so I’m giving all of you a shout-out! It can be tough when we have three hour practices every day, games, homework, work, etc. Things get a little crazy! But the great thing about being an athlete is that you always have your team. When I feel like I don’t want to go to practice because I have 12,000 other things I need to accomplish, I just think about my team. I know they are all going through the same thing, and that helps a little.

But this goes for non-athletes too. When you feel like you are trying to do so very much in a very short amount of time, just remember…here at Point Park, we don’t have class on Friday. And soon enough, the week will be over and we’ll all be relieved for a few days.

Keep your eyes on the prize, guys! I know it’s only Sunday night, but it will be Thursday night before we know it. Fill out those planners, grab your pens, and prepare yourself for another Point Park week. We can do it!

I find it hard to believe it is already November 9th. Where has this semester gone? We just got past midterms and finals are quickly approaching. Then Christmas comes, and then we’re straight into the spring! Crazy, right?

Well, I don’t know about all of you, but I am extremely stressed. I had to take a quick second and breathe, and think “what can I do to relax?” So, I’m blogging! In the next two weeks I have so much to do: two research papers, an article, an analysis, two tests and more assignments than I can count. On top of this, I’m working 38 hours next week. Whew. I’m sure any student reading this is in the same boat. It kind of seems like teachers dump all the hard work on us at the end. And after our constant slacking through September and October, we have no idea what to do with ourselves. Well folks, here it is. Get yourself a planner. Write down literally every little thing you have to do in the next couple of weeks and map out when you’re going to get it done. Believe me, it is a life saver. Especially for those of you taking online classes. This Internet is a scary world, and it’s hard to keep focus! So the planner definitely helps to keep your life in line, I promise.

Another thing, don’t forget to relax during this crazy time. I know it seems like there isn’t enough time to sit down and watch your favorite tv show, but there is! This could actually help you. If you’re having writer’s block or math block (uhhhh…?) or you just feel so sick of work that you can’t do it any more…seriously. Take a break. Breathe. Because, we’re all capable of this work. We signed up for it just 2 and a half months ago, right? We’ll all get through it.

Aside from this little pep talk, I hope everything up north is going well. I’m excited to see the snow in January and be reconnected with all of your beautiful faces!

It’s crazy to think of how quickly spring semester is approaching. Last I checked, I just moved to Florida, and I’m already scheduling my return. As happy as I am to be down here in the state of sunshine, I am super excited to return to the Burgh in just a few short months.

I started looking at my schedule yesterday and straightening things out. I must say, next semester is going to be a tough one. For those who care, my advice is to figure out your schedule before you actually have to sit down to do it because you will get frustrated. I love the fact that Point Park is so small. That closeness we get with our teachers is absolutely wonderful, but the size of our school can make scheduling a task. Because we are such a small university, there is not a huge variety of time options for upper level courses, so working everything out and fitting it all in can be quite difficult. My suggestion is to sit down with a notebook and a pen and start writing down classes you want to take and their times. This helps tremendously when you can look at everything written out and then actually make the decision of what classes you’ll be in.

My other suggestion for freshmen is to not be afraid to take more classes! Don’t limit yourself to 12 credits every semester. Go for 15, or even 18. If you find the workload is too tough, you can always drop something within the first couple weeks. But I have taken 18 credits every semester (except this one due to my Disney situation), and I never had a problem. I would also say to get those core classes out of the way! They are no fun (no offense), and we all hate them (oops). So try to get them done now, so it will be smooth sailing as you enter your junior and senior year.

I hope all is well in the cold and windy city of Pittsburgh! Good luck with scheduling everyone!

Today was Walt Disney World’s 40th birthday, so Magic Kingdom was filled to capacity. There were thousands of crying children, elderly men in hover rounds and frantic parents trying to keep track of their muiltiple babies. But within this madness, I found a Point Park alum bebopping down Main Street. A middle-aged man and his wife were headed toward me in two Pittsburgh Steeler shirts, so, like any other time I see a Pittsburgh fan, I instantly responded with, “Pittsburgh! Hey! I go to school in Pittsburgh!” On a normal occasion these people respond with: “Oh awesome!” And we make small talk for approximately 45 seconds, and they walk away. But not today. Today this Pittsburgh Disney guest responded with, “Oh, really? Where?” So I responded with Point Park University, obviously. The man lit up and said, “That’s my alma mater!”

We began chatting and turns out he knows Professor Meena. He is now currently a basketball coach at a small college here in Florida, and he and his wife take a trip to Disney World about once a month or so. We talked for about fifteen minutes until they had to move on to their next location, but before we departed they asked where else I work. I told them the shops I am normally in, and they told me they would make sure to find me on their next visit.

Here’s the moral of the story: People from Point Park are awesome. Okay…that’s kind of a joke, but seriously! It’s crazy how we can meet people, and it’s awesome that people from our university are off in so many different places doing things. That man (his name was Matt) was so nice, and I thoroughly enjoyed talking to him and his wife. I really hope I get to see them again in the future.

Thanks for reading! Have a magical day!

Well, hey guys! Sorry this has taken me such a long time. I have been so, so busy. To start, I absolutely love Florida and am having a blast, and I would like to share with you some of the things I’m learning down here:

1. How to dress fashionably.

4. How to make new friends that have the same fashion sense as mine.

5. How to eat gourmet style.

6. How to act normal when there are creepy men getting in your picture behind you. (Just kidding, I know those two creeps in the background.)

7. How to laugh and giggle when you’re in the park past closing time.

8. How to be a model.

9. How to meet fabulous people and enjoy the time spent with them.

10. How to enjoy the beautiful things in life and soak in every experience you can.

The last picture was taken at Magic Kingdom during the fireworks show they put on every night called “Wishes.” I get to see this any night I work the night shift at my job. Now how cool is that? I work right no Main Street in the Magic Kingdom, and I love every second of it. I’ve been super busy with classes, work and friends, but I am so thankful for this opportunity right now. I would encourage anyone to participate because I am learning so much more than I ever thought I would.

If you have any questions about the program or my interesting pictures posted above, please leave a comment! Thanks, guys!

Well, that title pretty much sums up my summer for you. (And it’s also a silly inside joke between some friends and me.)

This summer I mostly lived in Pittsburgh and worked for the university as an orientation leader. Being an OL was such a great experience. I spent the summer with some of the most fantastic people I have ever met, and I also got to welcome all of the new students to Point Park. I had such a great time working with Pioneer Experience these past few months. For those who didn’t attend (RUDE), we ate enough food to feed an entire country, we played games and lost our voices playing WAH, we popped our booties to some tunes during a sweet game show, and we learned how to play water pong–a fun alternative! All in all, our orientations were great fun, and I loved getting to know everyone and introduce them to our university. Aside from that, working as an OL had other perks as well. We all got to live in campus for free for most of the summer, and we also got a paycheck. For those who had a good time at Pioneer Experience this summer, I recommend applying for the job next year. As I said, it’s an awesome experience!

If anyone is interested in what else I did this summer: here goes. I worked for a bank in my hometown. (That sentence can be translated into: I got up at 8:30 every day and sat at a desk bored out of my mind wanting to punch someone in the face and then go home and sleep.) I also played on three softball teams this summer, which was a great time. I won a few championships, got a little tan and got to spend some time with some great people playing the sport I love.

Now that the recap is over, let me fill all of my (probably 2-4) readers in. I’m moving to Florida in exactly 41 hours. This semester I’ll be working for Disney World in the merchandise department. I’ll be there for 4 months, and I’m super excited. To remain as a full-time student at Point Park, I will be taking 3 online classes as well as an independent study. I can’t wait to tell all of you about what I learn and all of my adventures. Should be a fantastic time, so I hope I get some readers! Thanks, and I’ll be posting within the next few days about my move-in. Wish me luck, say a prayer, knock on some wood because this should be interesting.

A lot of city first timers are afraid of the bus, but I am here to tell you to have no fear. You just have to get on that bus with an open mind expecting that you will meet some interesting people…very interesting people.

The bus gets your from place to place. Without it, you would be walking and really? Who wants to walk? No one. So here’s the thing, you have to deal with some crazy people. But let me tell you, a lot of times you come off the bus with the best stories, inside jokes and laughs.

I remember the very first time my roommate and I tried to venture into Oakland…it was an epic disaster. We first of all had no idea what bus to get on so got on the first one that said Oakland. Then, when we started going we realized we weren’t on the right bus and began freaking out. However, the man behind us heard the insane girls in front of him and tried to help us out. He explained where we needed to get off and where we should walk to get to where we wanted go. He was so helpful, and I was surprised at how nice a complete bus stranger could be. We got off where he told us and found our destination with no problem. Thanks strange bus man for saving my day.

I’ve had plenty of hilarious experiences on the bus. The rides to and from Southside are the best. Once, my roommate and I got on the bus back and some old woman sat beside her and began talking to her about cheese and pie. Another time my friends and I were talking about the cutest styles of boots and some random man at the front of the bus creepily lifts his pant leg and says “I’m wearing some boots.” It was so hard not to laugh. In another bus ride I got offered some free wine…that I did not accept. But it made for a great laugh.

So here’s the thing. You can’t be afraid of the bus. It takes you places and makes life a lot easier and can actually be a lot of fun. So show your ID, pay that dollar and get ready for a thrilling 20 minutes or so.

Yeah, I said it. It’s that time of year when I legit do not want to do a thing. I barely even want to write this blog, but I got the energy to sit down and type. If I had to for whatever reason stand and do this thing…it would not be happening. Heck. No.

But alas, here I am blogging to all of you blog readers. I’m writing this instead of doing the 12,000 other things that need done. My motto is, they’ll get done eventually. It usually fails me, and I tend to find myself hurriedly getting everything done the few days before they are due.

This is not the way things should be done. Why can’t we procrastinators stop the insanity and get it together for the last few weeks of school? It’s because we are drained out. We’ve been writing papers, taking exams, doing homework, cramming, presenting, and doing any other assignment imaginable sporadically for the past 16 weeks, and now you’re trying to tell me that I have to do all of this at one time in the same week? How about no. I’m not feeling it.

In a perfect world, finals week would be spread out. One final per week, maybe. And in between the school would offer beverages and free food. They would probably throw in a free t-shirt as well saying “I Survived Finals Month.”

However, our world is not perfect, and we do have to do all of this stuff within one single week. And if it were all spread out, we’d be here longer. So suck it up and get your crap done so we can all go home.

Good luck on finals week!

With April Fool’s Day being tomorrow, I’m sure each and every one of you are sharing the same devious thought: “How can I make this day ten times better by playing an April Fool’s Day joke on my roommate and scaring the crap out of him/her?”

Well folks, I am here to give you the answer to that exact inquiry.

Here are a few suggestions to get a good laugh out of making your roommate want to pee his/her pants:

1. When they think no one is in the room, hide in your shower and begin making noises. If you live in Lawrence, they will most likely think this is a ghost.

2. In the morning, wake them up by ripping their covers off and saying, “There are cockroaches all around your bed! Get up!”

3. Steal all of their clothes out of their dressers and place them in the hallway.

4. Write them a love letter from a “secret admirer” and place it under your door, so they get it on their way out in the morning.

5. Make a fake assignment from one of their classes and stick it in one of their folders, so they think they forgot to do something.

6. While they’re sleeping, pour some water on a spot of their bed they’re not occupying. They’ll think they wet the bed. Gross.

7. Hide their mattress in someone else’s room.

8. Don’t speak to them all day. They’ll think you’re mad.

9. Start “discreetly” spraying air freshener all over their clothes and things when they can clearly see you. They’ll think they smell funny.

10. Stuff their shoes with tissues. If they’re not very smart, they’ll think their feet grew or their shoes shrunk.

Have fun with these and make sure to not forget it’s April Fool’s Day, or you’ll get caught being fooled by a fool.
